Why 3v3 works

Passing triangles

Three players means real combinations. Kids learn to support, switch and play one-twos.

Room for friends

It’s big enough for a group of neighborhood kids, so the yard becomes the place everyone meets.

Matches modern formats

England’s FA is moving under-7s to 3v3 starting in the 2026-27 season so young players get more time on the ball.

Games and training

Use it for small games on weekends and drills or wall work during the week.

Planning a 3v3 pitch

A 3v3 field needs a decent sized backyard, but it doesn’t need to be a perfect rectangle. We can taper one end or follow an angled fence line and it will still play well.

If you’re choosing between 2v2 and 3v3 and the yard allows it, go bigger. A 3v3 pitch still works for 1v1 and 2v2, and kids grow into the extra space fast.

Full field lining makes a 3v3 pitch look and feel like the real thing, with touchlines, a halfway line, a center circle and goal boxes.

To scale

What a pitch looks like in a real backyard

Two real lots drawn to scale, street and driveway right where they are. A 2v2 fits a typical back yard, and a 3v3 fits a deeper one.

FAQ

Common questions

How big is a 3v3 backyard pitch?

Most are about 50 × 30 ft to 60 × 40 ft. Plan for around 65 × 45 ft of total space including walls and access.

Can we play 2v2 on a 3v3 pitch?

Yes. A 3v3 pitch works well for 2v2 and 1v1, and the extra room makes running with the ball more realistic.

Does a 3v3 pitch have to be rectangular?

No. Trapezoid lots and angled fence lines are common. We fit the field to your yard and center the goals on each endline.
